sdílet| Doplňující popis: | INT.CODE: DET00003 Mongoose an animal capable of killing cobras. The car is said to have taken its name from a failed deal between De Tomaso and Carroll Shelby. Alejandro de Tomaso had volunteered to help Carroll Shelby develop a new Can-Am racing car in late 1964, when it was discovered that the Shelby Cobra would not be able to compete in that category. Disagreements over the car's design and De Tomaso's failure to deliver the five agreed racing cars by the deadline for the 1965 Can-Am season led Shelby to abandon the project. With the help of Carrozzeria Ghia, De Tomaso further completed the car under the project name P70. The only prototype was presented at the 1965 Turin Motor Show as the De Tomaso Sport 5000. The Mangusta used a modified version of the De Tomaso P70 chassis. De Tomaso then modified the steel chassis of the P70, which became the basis for the Mangusta, whose body design was created by Giorgetto Giugiaro of Ghia. Production of the Mangusta began in 1967, at the same time that De Tomaso acquired Ghia. A total of 401 cars were built, of which around 150 were destined for the European market. The others were shipped to North America. The first were equipped with a more powerful 4.7-litre Ford Hi-Po 289 engine, while later cars were fitted with a 4.9-litre Ford 302 engine.
